How it differs from a CRM
A CRM manages the customer lifecycle: leads, pipeline, calls, quotations and conversion. A Business Operating System manages the customer lifecycle and the employee lifecycle and the money moving between them: so a won deal can become an invoice, and a hired candidate can become a payroll record, without a manual handoff between systems.
How it differs from an ERP
Traditional ERP grew out of manufacturing and finance, with its centre of gravity in inventory, production, procurement and statutory accounting, and an implementation model that usually assumes a partner and a multi-month project. A Business OS centres on the commercial and people layers, and is defined by the constraint that a business without dedicated IT or RevOps must be able to deploy it, meaning configuration rather than code.
The defining test
The distinction between a Business OS and a software suite is whether the modules share a data core or merely share a login. If an automation rule spanning two modules requires an integration, a sync or a field mapping, it is a suite. If it acts on one record, it is an operating system.
